Security Business Sector/Qualifications
There are approximately 600,000 people working within the UK Security Industry, working within the sectors listed below:
Access Control. This provides the ability to control, monitor & restrict the movements of people, assets and vehicles in, out and around a building or site. This can be achieved by either electronic systems or manned services, or a combination of both.
Cash & Property Marking. This is the identification given to items to reduce their sell-on value and so discourage thieves. A unique code or number may be used and this will be kept on a database. CCTV. This is used for crime prevention and detection. There are currently over 4 million cameras installed in
the
Information Destruction. These companies dispose of items that contain sensitive information, preventing it from falling into the wrong hands.
Security Guarding Services. Security Officers protect the community, such as people, airports, factories, events, etc to prevent any crime or harm occurring. This is the largest sector in terms of numbers employed.
Security Equipment Manufacturers. These manufacturers produce a wide variety of products including burglar alarm systems, personal attack alarms and smoke protectors.
Physical Security Equipment. These companies distribute equipment that comprises of a wide range of product types, from doors and fencing to locks, safes and steel office furniture.
Door Supervisors. Personnel providing security and access control at concerts, pubs, night clubs, etc.
Security Systems. The installation of alarm systems helps protect the public, businesses, factories and sites.
Security Transport. Cash in Transit companies are involved in the transportation, storage and sorting of cash and other valuables for retail and financial organisations.
Miscellaneous Groups. Community Wardens, Dog Handlers, Private Investigators and Store Detectives

The SIA
The Security Industry Authority is the organisation responsible for regulating the private security industry. The SIA are an independent body reporting to the Home Secretary. They were established in 2003 under the terms of the Private Security Act 2001. This act makes it illegal for non-licensed personnel to work within the security industry. People seeking a career in the security industry must achieve minimum qualifications defined by the SIA and are subject to criminal record checks.
