Skills for Security continuing to develop standards

Release date: 20th March 2008

Businesses from all sectors of the economy increasingly look to the security business sector to provide support in areas as diverse as access control systems, through cash and valuables in transit to security guarding. However, fundamental to meeting that demand is the sector's ability to recruit and train skilled workers.

The Government is encouraging all sectors of the economy to develop National Occupational Standards (NOS) to cover all workforce activities because modern occupations are more complex and demand higher skills. Companies must offer ever higher standards in order to remain competitive and National Occupational Standards set the benchmark of competency against which employers can measure the skills of their workforce, and make decisions on training and development needs. For this reason, Skills for Security engages with all sub-sectors within the security business sector to ensure that NOS are in place and up-to-date.

Already this year we have developed standards for Precognition Officers, Community Wardens, Security Management, Security Co-ordinators and Parking Control and we are now pleased to announce that approval for the National Occupational Standards for both Cash Processing and Security & Loss Prevention can be added to this growing list.

Mikael Graham, Director of HR and Legal at Loomis, and Chair of the Sector Consultation Group involved with the development of the NOS for Cash Processing comments, "I am pleased to see the National Occupational Standards approved, this provides a solid benchmark for organisations to adhere to. The NOS are an important tool for all of the organisations involved with Cash Processing and it states professionalism within the industry to work within this framework."

All of the National Occupational Standards developed by Skills for Security, on behalf of the sector are available to download from the National Occupational Standards Directory, which can be accessed via: www.ukstandards.org.uk.
